Packing my hospital bag was one of those moments that made everything feel real. As a young mom, I wanted to be as prepared as possible without overpacking (which, let’s be honest, is easier said than done). After lots of research, advice from other moms, and a bit of trial and error, I’ve put together a list of essentials that I know will make my labour and delivery experience more comfortable.
For Mom: Comfort & Essentials
• Comfy Clothes – A loose, soft nightgown or oversized T-shirt for labour, plus cozy pajamas or a nursing-friendly outfit for after delivery.
• Robe, Slippers, Blankets – Hospitals can be chilly, and having a robe makes it easy to feel cozy while walking around. Extra blankets are great for warmth and comfort as hospital blankets are thin
• Socks & Sandals – Warm socks for comfort, and flip-flops for the shower.
• Nursing Bra & Breast Pads – Whether or not I plan to breastfeed, my body will be adjusting, so having these on hand is a must.
• Incontinence/Postpartum Diapers and Extra Absorbent Pads – Hospital pads are okay, but adult diapers (like Depends) are a game-changer for postpartum bleeding.
• Peri Bottle – Some hospitals provide one, but bringing my own (like the Frida Mom one) makes postpartum care way easier.
• Toiletries – Toothbrush, toothpaste, face wash, deodorant, dry shampoo, hairbrush, chapstick, and moisturizer – because hospital air is dry.
• Makeup & Hair Ties – Just in case I want to freshen up for pictures or feel more like myself.
• Glasses or Contacts – If you need them, don’t forget them!
For Labour & Delivery
• Birth Plan & ID – If I have a birth plan, I’ll print a few copies for my care team. Plus, ID and health card are a must.
• File folder - Keeping an extra folder around for all of your important documents helps to ensure they don’t get lost or misplaced
• Lip Balm & Water Bottle – Hospitals are dry, and labour is exhausting. A good water bottle with a straw is super helpful.
• Snacks – For myself and my partner – labour can be long, and hospital food isn’t always available at odd hours.
• Massage Ball & Essential Oils – A tennis ball or massage tool for back pain relief, and lavender oil for relaxation.
For Baby
• Onesies & Sleepers – At least 2-3 in newborn and 0-3M sizes.
• Swaddle Blanket – The hospital provides some, but I’m bringing a cute, soft one for photos and extra warmth.
• Hat & Mittens – Newborns get cold easily, and mittens help prevent them from scratching their face.
• Diapers & Wipes – The hospital provides some, but having my own preferred brand is nice.
• Going-Home Outfit – Something comfy and weather-appropriate for baby’s first big trip home.
• Car Seat – Installed and ready to go!
For My Partner/Support Person
• Pillow & Blanket – Hospital chairs aren’t the comfiest for overnight stays.
• Extra Clothes – Just in case labour takes longer than expected.
• Phone Charger – A long cord is best since outlets aren’t always close to the bed.
• Snacks & Drinks – Because they need energy too!
Extras That Might Be Nice
• Portable Fan – For cooling down during labour.
• Notebook & Pen – To jot down special moments, notes from the doctor, or baby’s first stats.
• Bluetooth Speaker – For calming music or hypnobirthing tracks.
This list keeps things practical while ensuring I have everything I need to feel comfortable, cared for, and prepared for my little one’s arrival. What are your must-haves for a hospital bag? Let me know in the comments!
